At Mepal & Witcham, we believe that every child deserves a curriculum that inspires curiosity, builds deep knowledge, and prepares them to thrive both academically and personally. That’s why we have thought carefully about our curriculum that not only meets the expectations set out by the National Curriculum, but goes further, offering our pupils a rich, rigorous, and exciting foundation for learning.
We follow the Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) for our foundation subjects, a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum designed to build pupils’ understanding over time. One of the things we love about the PKC is how it makes learning meaningful and connected. Children don’t just encounter facts - they build a deep sense of how different ideas link together across subjects and year groups. For example, ideas like civilisation, power, or climate are introduced early and revisited in more depth as pupils grow older, helping them to build strong, secure knowledge.
Throughout the curriculum, we focus on both substantive knowledge (the core facts and ideas within each subject) and disciplinary knowledge (how that knowledge is gathered and understood). That means children don’t just learn about history - they learn to think like historians, analysing sources, questioning perspectives, and making connections. The same is true across the curriculum, whether it’s scientific enquiry, geographical fieldwork, or artistic critique.
One of our key priorities is to make sure that every child can access and succeed within our curriculum. That includes those who need extra support, those with special educational needs, and those who may not have had the same cultural opportunities as others. For this reason, we place strong emphasis on explicit teaching, making sure new knowledge is clearly explained, carefully practised, and regularly revisited. This helps all children to ‘know more and remember more’.
We’re also passionate about helping our pupils build their cultural capital - the knowledge, experiences, and understanding they need to make sense of the world and take their place in it with confidence. Through exposure to great works of literature, art, music, philosophy, and science, as well as through trips, performances, and rich discussions in the classroom, we aim to broaden their horizons and deepen their sense of belonging in the world.
Our curriculum doesn’t stand still. It’s dynamic, thoughtful, and constantly evolving based on reflection, evidence, and the needs of our pupils. We make deliberate choices about what we teach and when, so that learning is layered and built over time. Pupils revisit important content in different contexts, allowing them to make connections and strengthen their understanding.
Ultimately, our curriculum is about giving every child the tools to succeed—not just in tests or at secondary school, but as thoughtful, knowledgeable, and well-rounded individuals. We’re proud of the curriculum we offer, and even prouder of the confident, curious learners it helps to shape.
Because we are a school of mixed age classes, we followed a 2-year cycle.
